The Wig

Here's the only problem with the generally exciting wave of J-horror movies that started reinvigorating scary movies ten years ago: there's little sense of humor. And there's even less in the watered-down imitators like American remakes (I call them Re-horror) or this laughably earnest Korean horror about a haunted wig. Yes, this flick is about a wig that kills. Just think what Troma Films could have done with the concept! Instead of delivering flipped-out goofy shlock, The Wig desperately tries to be serious searing schlock. Yet no matter how jittery the editing gets, no matter how many spider-leg follicle/tendrils infest the corners of the screen, no matter how many Uzumaki-like hair pretzels the horrific hairpiece contorts itself into...it's still just a wig and not very scary. A queer plot twist towards the end raises the interest factor a tad, but it's too little to late.
