Emily Estefan to Headline at Miami Beach Pride
READ TIME: 4 MIN.
Born December 5, 1994 to music legends Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan developed a strong passion for music at a young age. Since the precocious Estefan first began performing on stage at 8 years old, her musical career has spanned across several platforms that have included writing, producing and performing music.
From the years 2008-2013, Estefan performed with Miami Sound Machine at the Bette Midler Happy Hulaween event and with Carole King and Estefan's mother at Foxwoods. She recorded a guitar solo and joined a list of respected artists on the track "Somos El Mundo" ("We Are The World") to help raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti, another guitar solo for Gloria Estefan's album "Miss Little Havana," and for Carlos Santana's song "Besos de Lejos."
In 2012, and then again in 2013, respectively, Estefan tried her hand at producing music when she created a dance mix for Kathy Griffin's theme song "I'll Say It," and produced two tracks for the artist Fantine. Her singing debut took place at the historic Hollywood Bowl in 2014 where she sang the classic "Where The Boys Are" with the LA Youth Orchestra. Estefan co-wrote "If I Never Got To Tell You"– the only original song written for the hit Broadway show "On Your Feet!," after which she developed her own YouTube channel dubbed "Fairy Light Fridays," where she covered songs and created videos, releasing them on Fridays for her followers.
In 2015, she premiered on Entertainment Tonight, playing her first original song and music video "F#ck To Be," which celebrated individuality and the importance of not acquiescing to society's expectations. Her original song "I Just Want It To Be Over" premiered at the Miami Beach 100 concert and was featured on The Today Show.
After having graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2016, at the age of 21, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Writing and Production with a minor in Philosophy, Estefan created her own record label, Alien Shrimp Records. Soon thereafter, the label signed a multi-year distribution deal with Sony Red in order to help spread her "music for the planet" mantra, which expresses Emily's belief that music not only reaches across cultures and oceans, but space and time as well.
In the same year, Emily, wrote, performed and produced her debut album, "Take Whatever You Want." Since then, she has continued writing and producing original music and performing at music festivals like Essence, SXSW, and GroundUp Music Fest, to name a few.
"I just want to tell my stories, put out good energy and love into the world, and not be afraid to be my true self in my music," she says.
Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Pride has grown from a neighborhood event to an event on the global stage with A-list celebrities such as Gus Kenworthy as Grand Marshal in 2018 and Betty Who, Thelma Houston and Taylor Dayne as headliners. Previous Grand Marshals and VIPs have included: Ross Mathews as Celebrity Grand Marshal in 2017, Elvis Duran as Grand Marshal in 2016, and Jordin Sparks as headline entertainer. Mario Lopez was Grand Marshal in 2015, Gloria Estefan was Grand Marshal in 2014 and Adam Lambert performed in 2013.
Miami Beach Pride attendance has grown as well. An estimated 15,000 spectators turned out for the first Pride parade in 2009; an estimated 145,000 attended the event in 2018, which attracted not only South Floridians, but also visitors from throughout the world. In addition to Parade spectators, last April's event included more than 70 parade contingencies, 35 floats and 3,000 participants. The Pride Festival which followed featured more than 100 LGBTQ-friendly vendors and businesses, plus refreshments, two stages of entertainment, a family-friendly play area and fireworks. Recently, Miami Beach Pride was named one of the "Top 100 Events of the Year" for the fifth year in a row by BizBash Magazine and has earned the Pink Flamingo Award as favorite multi-day event for five years in a row.
Miami Beach Gay Pride is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority and the City of Miami Beach.
