MOXIE Theatre is proud to announce they'll be the first company in San Diego to premiere "The Kid Thing," a play by award-winning writer, Sarah Gubbins. Her new TV Series, "I Love Dick," which premiered on Amazon, was co-created and produced by none other than Jill Solloway, the creator, writer and director of Amazon's "Transparent." Gubbins is also co-writing the feature film "Ten Aker Wood" with Sollaway.

"Basically, my big, arrogant wish is to create characters that will live in the cultural imagination -- to see what fabulous queer characters we can add that will inhabit a space that can live alongside Willy Loman," said Gubbins on afterellen.com. "Let's have more queer characters taking up the cultural imagination or living in it. I think that's a richness that we get to strive for."

But the theater world knew about Gubbins before TV did. She's a playwright who has earned a lot of attention. In 2012 she was named Best Playwright by Chicago Magazine and her play "The Kid Thing," soon to make its San Diego premiere at MOXIE Theatre November 13-December 11, was developed at Steppenwolf Theatre and awarded the Edgarton Foundation New American Play Prize and the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Play.

"The Kid Thing" begins at a dinner party with two lesbian couples who've been longtime friends. The evening takes a sharp turn when one couple announces they're going to have a baby. Gubbins has been a champion within the lesbian and queer communities for her dedication to populating her work with strong lesbian and queer characters.

Whatever she's striving for, it appears to be within her reach. Gubbins' work is premiering on stages and TV screens across America. Her play, "The Kid Thing" begins at MOXIE on Sunday, November 13. Opening Night is Saturday, November 19, and it runs through Sunday December 11.

MOXIE's Artistic Director, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, says "As a company of women who have all been asked if we're doing "the kid thing," we understand that this question is universal and we're excited for our audiences to explore it in the context of the play. MOXIE's mission is to create more diverse images of women "to live in the cultural imagination" as Sarah Gubbins says. And 'The Kid Thing' does just that."

"The Kid Thing" is directed by Kym Pappas. The Design and Production Team includes: Sarah Mouyal (Scenic Designer), Jennifer Brawn Gittings (Costume Designer), Christopher Renda (Lighting Designer), Matt Lescault Wood (Sound Designer), Angelicia Ynfante (Prop Design), Jessamyn Foster (Stage Manager), TNT Scenic (Technical Director), Ashleigh Scott (Scenic Charge Artist), Jose Galvan (Assistant Director).

On Sunday, November 27 at 2 p.m., join the actors for a post-show discussion, learn more about the play and enrich your theater-going experience the Second Sunday Q&A. Tickets run $15-40. Seniors, Students, Military and AASD receive $5 off general admission.

"The Kid Thing" will run through December 11 at MOXIE Theatre, 6663 El Cajon Blvd Suite N, San Diego, CA 92115. For information or tickets, call 858-598-7620 or visit www.moxietheatre.com
