Laverne Cox To Play Lawyer in New CBS Drama

Transgender actress Laverne Cox, who was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in the comedy series "Orange is the New Black," is trying her hand at drama in the new CBS legal pilot, "Doubt," as reported by Gay Star News.

"I am so grateful for the universe's plan for me and the amazing people in my life who support me and that plan. Thank you so much," Cox tweeted on Wednesday February 11.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Cox will play "a fierce and funny, competitive and compassionate transgender Ivy League-educated attorney" named Cameron Wirth.

Wirth, like Cox, has experienced injustice first hand. This makes her fight harder for her clients.

Cox, who graced the cover of Time Magazine last year, recently guested on MTV's "Faking It" and Bravo's "Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce." She also has a role in the upcoming feature film "Grandma" starring Lily Tomlin.

Cox's Sophia on "Orange Is the New Black" and Jeffrey Tambor's Maura on Amazon's "Transparent" have opened a new chapter for transgender characters on television. On broadcast TV, ABC's "Ugly Betty" and "Dirty Sexy Money" opened the door with such characters several years ago, the regular Alexis Meade, played by Rebecca Romijn, and the recurring Carmelita, played by transgender actress Candis Cayne, respectively.
